Glenn Kotche presents four nights of intimate, innovative and audience interactive workshops in composition, drumming, and sound art / instrument making culminating in a concert performance in the Old Town School of Folk Music's acoustically acclaimed Maurer Hall on Friday, November 7th.

Glenn Kotche: On Composition

Glenn will demonstrate his disparate approaches to composition.  This discussion will include his approach to writing for classical groups (Kronos Quartet, eighth blackbird, Bang on A Can, Maya Beiser and Jeff Zeigler), percussion groups (So Percussion and Third Coast Percussion), and his own solo percussion works.  He will also demonstrate how he incorporates extended techniques on various percussion instruments to create new sounds for his pieces.  A Q&A will follow his conversation - some familiarity with music composition is suggested.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 5, 2014 - 7pm
InGlenntion: Make your own a Percussion Instrument/Sound Sculpture 
Szold Hall (4545 N. Lincoln Ave.)

Participants will create a customized piece of percussion/sound art with Glenn by building and playing prepared drumheads and custom playing implements. All participants will be able to take home the installation they create! There is no prior knowledge or study of music required.

Join Wilco drummer and percussionist Glenn Kotche as he explores the art and practice of his approach to playing drums for Wilco, his solo pieces and everything in between.  Glenn will go into detail on how he creates parts for songs and the inspiration behind select beats.  In addition to drumming,  a Q&A facilitated by an Old Town drumming instructor will follow Glenn’s discussion.  For drummers or anyone interested in the creative process.
